Brett Hutchins

Brett Hutchins is Professor of Media and Communications and Deputy Dean (Research) in the Faculty of Arts.

He is a former Australian Research Council (ARC) Future Fellow and Head of the School of Media, Film & Journalism in the Faculty of Arts.

His research and teaching specialises in the following areas:

  • Sports media and communications
  • Environmental media and communications
  • Digital and mobile media
  • News media and journalism

Brett’s research investigates who wins, who loses and how during processes of media, technological and environmental change. He uses a combination of critical analysis and evidence drawn from industry and policy circles to focus on questions of power and how it is exercised.

He has authored and edited several books and publishes regularly in leading international communications and media studies journals such as Media, Culture & Society, Digital Journalism, Convergence, International Journal of Communication and International Journal of Press/Politics.

Brett also sits on the editorial board of Journal of Communication (the flagship journal of the International Communication Association), Communication & Sport, Journal of Sport & Social Issues, Environmental Communication: A Journal of Nature & Culture and Media International Australia.
