Professional sport maintains a special place in society evidenced by media coverage, economic investment, and identity development. However professional sport has also demonstrated the capacity to create economic hardship, cultural division, and political tension. As aspects of professional sport continuously evolve to now include legal sport betting in the U.S., eSport and a greater focus on diversity, equity and inclusion, the context of professional sport is fertile ground for examination and study. Similarly, the impact of sport science has major implications on technology development, athlete health and performance, data rights, ownership and usage. Given the complexity of the professional sport ecosystem and all who play a role in it, this years conference will focus on the following themes:
At this year's conference, focused areas of investigation include:
Sport and Health: How do professional sport organizations impact community health and well-being?
Sport Betting and eSport: How does sport betting impact a community (eg. culturally, politically, economically)? How does eSport impact cultural and economic relationships?
Gender Equity and Policy: Does professional sport advance gender equity in all domains of sport? How can policy be created to improve diversity, equity and inclusion in sport?
Media, Marketing and Identity: How does professional sport create a sense of identity for a community? How does the marketing and media coverage of professional sport impact identity of a city?
Sport Science: How can technology be developed to optimize health and sport performance for professional athletes? How is sport science impacting cultural, political and economic relationships with professional sport?
We are both interested in work that deals with these challenges on a day-to-day basis and speculative theoretical work that positions sport and society researchers at the forefront for interpreting and acting on broader cultural, political and economic implications.
